☀️😀 Did you know your very first thought in the morning will help determine your attitude for the rest of the day? It’s true. 💯 I learned that from a brain expert. 🧐🧠 I used to have a really bad attitude. More than you would have guessed. And I still can struggle with it! But… This has helped me. It can help you, too. This is what he said to do: Every day when you wake up, Intentionally make your first thought: “Today is going to be a great day!” Why is that important? Because then your brain goes around all day looking for reasons that is true! And you know what? We find what we are looking for! (So don’t let your first thought be: “today is going to suck!” - say “Today’s going to be rad!”) That’s why two people can have the exact same experience, Yet they can have different attitudes about it. Difficult things happen to all of us, But our attitude and perspective is the most important thing we control. And this is what I know about you: You are so incredibly valuable. You have infinite worth. You have abilities and skills to bless the world. Yet the battle so often that holds us back is in our own heads. We have believed lies about ourselves. We have believed lies about others. We have believed lies about God. We don’t see ourselves or the world correctly. Here’s a couple truths: You aren’t an accident. You were created by a good God. No matter what you’ve done (Cuz we’ve all messed up a lot) He still loves you. He is inviting you to be close to Him. His kingdom is above this world. Life with Him is secure. He died for us to save us - His name is Jesus, which literally means “Yahweh saves.” He rose again from the dead - we can have new life, too He is coming again - to make all things right! Today is the day of salvation- each of us has an invitation to follow Him and let Him be our King. And you know what? He saved me from addiction and sin and despair. He’s given me a hope that cannot die. I am so happy to belong to Jesus. He is the only good master. I will live happily for Him. I will die trusting in Him. And art is a way I hope I can express His beauty. Today is a great day because I have a faithful King. He is my trust. #acrylicpainting

I went to Alaska when I was in high school. I remember being in awe of how the mountains rose out of the water. I’ve been lucky enough to live close to mountains for most of my life, but that trip was special. Mountains are strong and seem unshakable. Yet they welcome these tender flowers to grow. I’m thankful for a God who is both strong and tender. He is high and lifted up, Yet He dwells with the lowly in heart also. 🎨 Here’s a tip for creating hazy or misty scenes in acrylics: use both titanium white (it’s opaque) and zinc white (it’s transparent). In this I used both to create the feeling of the mountain going up into the cloud in the back. There are difficult situation’s each one of us face. There’s been times in my life where I felt completely helpless to change for the good. But through it all, there has been one friend who has the closer than a brother. He has never left me. He has never forsaken me. And in the darkest of nights, he has been my strength and salvation. I am speaking, of course, about Jesus. And this song is a great reminder to my heart. If he has been faithful to me, all my life up till now, He will be faithful in the future also. I can trust him today. And that is incredibly good news in the world where it’s hard to know who you can trust. I’d watched my father do it as I grew up and it wasn't always easy. And he eventually went to work for Boeing to support our family better. But after finding enough success in art sales to really consider it (and the support of my wife, Renae, who is amazing!), I realized I could put myself out there and take a risk. I’ve done things I never thought I’d do with my life and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. While I don’t recommend everyone quit their day jobs to take up a career in painting, I do want to encourage you to take small risks and see what you can do. Enter a painting in a juried show. Try a new medium. Learn to paint a portrait. Take a new class. A year ago we were living in a small house in the neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong, I was thankful. It was all we could afford because the cost of housing is so high where we live. In fact, the only reason we were able to afford that is because a friend of my dad’s sold it to us at his cost when he bought it a few years ago. So again, I was thankful. But I still had dreams. I had dreams of a house with open space around it. I had dreams of a larger studio where I could host, workshops, or events. I had dreams, and I couldn’t see how they would come to be. I remember praying to God over and over and trying my best to surrender my desires to him. I knew he was trustworthy and it was kind of hard to reconcile my desires with my reality. It was hard because I knew I had no reason to complain. I knew I had been provided with everything that I needed. Still, I couldn’t get away from the desires that were in my heart. I longed for a more beautiful place to live. And then one day a miracle happened. It was really amazing and now we live in a beautiful house on beautiful property and I have an amazing studio. And I know that not all dreams come true. And I know that I don’t deserve this. And I’m not trying to say that what I had before wasn’t already an amazing blessing - because it was. All I’m saying is that sometimes - because of unbelief and fear of disappointment - I’ve been afraid of my dreams. Sometimes I’ve been afraid to really strive for something big because I’m afraid I won’t make it. I’m afraid of failure. I’m afraid of looking bad. And I’m afraid of being disappointed in God - even though I know he is trustworthy and I know he is good. Yet I still struggle with my faith, especially when it comes to personal dreams. But I’m here today to say that dreams do come true. So don’t give up on them.

It’s time to be courageous. It’s time to be creative. It’s time to be you! Don’t try to fit into the world. Instead, be yourself and let the world fit around you. #braveartist #jedthebrave #acrylicpainting #artistsoninstagram #artistlife

I shared this inside our community the other day, so I thought I’d share it here also… a bit about what makes me who I am: If you know my story, you'd know that Easter has great significance for me. My whole life was dark. I almost lost everything due to my own addiction. And on the darkest day of my life, God met me. I was in my studio painting alone, and He spoke to me. He helped me see that there was hope. That He could rebuild my life. I read Isaiah 61. It talks about broken people being turned into "oaks of righteousness". I had this photo from the top of my parents' driveway. It's not an oak tree, but I painted it. It gave me hope that God could change my life around. So, if you're ever going through a hard time, You're not alone. And my only thought for you is to turn your gaze upward. There are problems that I've faced that have been too big for me. But they haven't been too big for God. That painting now hangs in our bedroom. And it reminds me that there is always hope. And you definitely don't have to believe like I do to belong here, But I share my story in hope that it might encourage someone. Because life is hard. It can be super wonderful also. But I know we all carry wounds. So, just know that I while I am usually smiling and happy, I also carry wounds and have a story. And I'm still in process. 🏆 What are your goals for 2024? This is that time of reflection, isn’t it? How can we grow? 📈 What do we want to pursue? For me, I’m thankful to have some more time to paint recently. 🎨 But you know what??? I’m at my relatives house right now, and I’ve been on my computer/phone 📱for the past couple hours working. And that’s okay sometimes, right? But one of my goals for next year is to have better boundaries with work. Because, while you may never have guessed this about me if you knew me in high school, 🏫 I’ve turned into a pretty driven person and maybe even a bit of a workaholic. Thank God, 🙏 I’m somewhat aware of it, or it would be much worse. And thank God, I have a little girl 👧 to tug at me to go play. It was last minute, but I’d been on a tv show that year and I knew there were a lot of people who wanted the opportunity to buy a painting 🖼️ The problem was I didn’t have any paintings. So I painted a small painting that I could show on day 1. And I put placeholder question marks❓on all the other days to indicate more paintings would arrive. But I honestly didn’t know what would happen. 🤷‍♂️ The first one sold, though, after a couple hours. And I was busily painting the second one 😂 Then painting 2 sold. Then painting 3. After a few, they began to sell within minutes. ⏰ I started getting emails from people who had it in their cart but someone else got it first. One painting somehow sold twice, so I had to refund the second purchase! But because of being too busy with Acrylic University, I haven’t done the show the past few years. This year I told my beautiful wife late one night, “You’ll probably be mad at me, but I’m doing the 12 Days show again this year.” “When?” “It starts tomorrow.” To which she replied, “Good luck with that!” 😆😆😆 But anyway, it was super fun, and I’m glad to have had 24 paintings leave the studio thru the show. Taking a painting for GOOD to GREAT - that was my goal last night as I resumed work on this one. What do you think? I filmed the process and will post it to YouTube in a few days, but I simply wanted to be BOLD with my color. And to make that change, I had to take a risk. Because my painting was “good” already, and when I began pushing it and attempting to make it better, I risked losing the GOOD. But if I didn’t take a chance, I never would have seen this outcome. And I actually love what happened in this painting. So, my question for you is: where do you need to take a risk? Where do you need to try something new or different? Where do you need to break out of the normal and try for GREATNESS, even if it risks the GOOD? Notes: 🎨 This was painted during a workshop recently. It started on a neutral, gray background. I like painting on a neutral gray because it is an easy starting point. 👨‍🎨 I know anything lighter will be moving toward my lights, and anything darker will be going toward my darks, and because the gray is so neutral it won’t stand out in the end if it does shows through. To me, the most important part of this painting was establishing the contrast between the shadow foreground and the sunny ☀️ background mountain. So while the rocks have quite a bit of variety, they stay within a fairly limited value range, so that the eye will be drawn backward to the main focal area. Also, I used a very large brush 🖌️ to create the rocks because I like them feeling like they’re big. Colors: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Naphthol Red, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Green ——- 🎨 Take the challenge & Paint Across America with me! 50 paintings, one from each state. 🖼 Painting 1: Mine, Painting 2-4 are NOT MINE - they are from @mikesvob . Painting 5 is Mine. Let me explain... I started painting in acrylics when I was 25 🥳. I LOVED it, but I had NO CLUE what I was doing. Then, after about 6 months, I took my first workshop. It CHANGED EVERYTHING. 🎨 My instructor was @mikesvob - He's an amazing artist and instructor. He shared freely from his years of experience, and I listened intently, took notes, and tried to apply what he was teaching. See, I'd stumbled across his work in a gallery 6 months prior. His work mesmerized me. 🖼 (See his paintings 2,3,4.) I would stand in that gallery and look at his work and just dream of painting like that one day - still do :-) Then, for Christmas, my mom gave me a book of his - it was completely random, she didn't know I'd seen his work. But that book is what led me to take that first workshop. @mikesvob gave me a FRAMEWORK FOR PAINTING in acrylics. He taught me about the importance of VALUES. I saw his FREEDOM with color. Honestly, he saved me years of wasted effort in that ONE WEEK. (I highly recommend you learn from him - go to www.mikesvob.com - I've taken more than one!) The first painting (of the alley with a green sky) is an example of the FREEDOM of colors I got from him. And the last painting (old man on steps) was my first "good" painting. I did it the final day of that first workshop. He had us paint on black, and my painting turned out (it felt like a MIRACLE!). I immediately fell in love with painting on black. So, I got that from Mike also. Anyway, @mikesvob I can't say thanks enough for how you helped me JUMPSTART in a brand new medium when I didn't know anything! You gave me so much. You are still an inspiration to me. And I know that there are thousands of other artists out there just like me. ps. I painted 50 small paintings… one from each state. 🖼️ And small paintings aren’t “impressive” like big ones, but I firmly believe if you were given a set amount of time⏱️, you’d grow more in your art by painting multiple small paintings rather than one large one. In fact, I’ve experienced myself, and I’ve seen it happen in others, too. 📈 In fact, after working with thousands of people, I know that anything you can do to remove obstacles to your creativity is good. 👍🏼 And small canvases are less intimidating than big ones. And they take less time. 5 Smart Ways to Boost Your Creativity: Before I start, let me be HONEST. I NEED this list more than anyone. My creative mind seemingly LOVES distractions :-/ So, as I share these thoughts, I also am working to implement them... just to be clear :-) 1. Make a TO-DON'T LIST. It’s tempting simply to ADD things to our life and schedule: “I want to get better at _________” "I resolve to spend more time doing __________" But what are you going to STOP doing to MAKE ROOM in your life? That's where a TO-DON'T LIST comes in. You can't add something to your life unless you also subtract something :-) 2. Set Small, Achievable Goals You have dreams. Sometimes BIG dreams. The problem: sometimes our DREAMS are SO BIG we can't see the small steps we need to take every day. The solution: have BIG DREAMS, but set small, ACHIEVABLE GOALS along the way. They will add up and move you closer to your big dreams :-) 3. FOCUS on One Thing: Creative minds are amazing. NEW IDEAS come (and go) easily. The problem: TOO MANY IDEAS (even good ones) can lead to SCATTERED effort. The solution: Choose ONE GOAL AT A TIME. Stay focused, and put maximum effort toward that goal until it is reached. 4. STOP watching the NEWS. Fear is a CREATIVITY DRAIN, and most news just causes anxiety with no solution afforded. Also, when we DISTRACT ourselves with media, our attention is split in a million directions, and we often can't get an entire project done because of it. The solution: TURN OFF TV, set down your phone, and DEDICATE TIME to focused creativity. 5. Take INTENTIONAL BREAKS Creative work takes energy, and you’re not a robot. The problem: If you neglect to care for yourself, YOU & YOUR WORK SUFFER. The solution: plan to REST & REPLENISH. Whether short breaks during the day or longer breaks between projects, those times of refreshment will help you BE & DO your best. 🎨 🖼 I've got some great news! (see below) But first, about the picture... This was an alley behind our old house in Indianapolis. I love alleys - as you probably know if you've been around me for long. And this alley had bricks still hanging in there from the early 1900's. They made for a bumpy drive, but I loved the way they looked. And the light reflected off them like magic. So, here's a painting of that beloved alley from a couple years ago. But....... I've got some exciting news!!! (I'm excited, at least :-) 🥳 I finished all 50 states from my "Paint Across America" Challenge! 🇺🇸 That means I painted fifty 8x8 scenes - 🏝🏜🏔 - one from each state in the US. I was trying out some new paints from Kroma (Vancouver, BC), and I started out with a black toned canvas. There are several coats on the light areas to make them light enough over the dark background. My colors were: Titanium white Cadmium yellow light Cadmium orange Naphthol red Ultramarine blue Phthalates green Vancouver gray - such a fun color! This palette gives me a lot of flexibility. I started with the foreground rocks and worked my way toward the background. Ended with the sky, then repeated the process with additional coats to bring up the light values and add more nuances - like the misty feel. I love spending time with my daughter. Over the years, I've realized it has helped me see the world through the eyes of a child again. Spend time with a child, and it will remind you of what it was like. Back then, everything felt new, unfiltered, and full of wonder. The delight in small things, the untainted perspectives, and the boundless imagination of childhood are what I want to capture in art. I believe that the genuine and uninhibited way children perceive their surroundings allows for a kind of creativity and originality that often gets lost or clouded as we grow older. By reconnecting with that childlike vision, I hope to bring fresh insights and a unique voice to my artistic endeavors. This hit me hard and got me wondering - is our obsession with happiness keeping us unhappy? Sometimes I feel we're too fixated on personal happiness at any expense. Telling the truth and doing the virtuous thing is hard. It's painful. So. This painting does not exist any longer 😩 but the story is informative. What happened is this: I was in my second year of being a full-time artist. 🎨 I knew I wanted to make instructional videos, so I asked a friend to help. He took some time off work to help film. We created a plan and started working. This was my main demo painting. 🖼 It was a scene that I really thought could be great. And in retrospect, when I look at this photo... I actually really like it. Sure, there are things I'd change. But overall, I like the painting. But... In the moment... When I was filming and feeling pressure... I didn't like it. I wasn't satisfied. I needed this to be GREAT, right❓❓ This was a painting lesson, and people want to see GREATNESS - Or so I thought. So, not being satisfied, And growing impatient with IMPERFECT, I kept working and changing the painting. Going and going, more and more frustrated and insecure. And guess what? I screwed the whole thing up. 😩🥺 For real. To be honest, I don't even know exactly what happened to this painting. Did I paint over it? Did I throw it away? I don't remember. Maybe I blocked that memory :-) But, there is a lesson I am learning - even today. Here it is: It's not always helpful to judge your work in the moment. Sometimes our vision is cloudy. ☁️☁️ Sometimes we don't recognize the good. Sometimes we make hasty decisions. This doesn't mean we shouldn't analyze our paintings We need to critique our own work. But time gives us new eyes. And what I've learned in the years since this painting is this: Artists don't always want to see just the GREATNESS. That can lead to discouragement in their own work. So, I try to show my failures more now. I have a lot of them. But failure is not the opposite of success. Failure is part of success. 🔑 The end. “The Broken Gate” 🎨 It’s easy to get discouraged, isn’t it? This painting started with an epic failure. 😫 Same with my painting yesterday. And it’s easy to feel discouraged in those moments. Things aren’t going the way we hoped. But here’s a trick do someone who feels discouraged. It may be helpful. Reframe the problem. Instead of fighting against whatever seems to be the obstacle, let the obstacle guide you. yesterday my paint box fell. There was a bunch of yellow paint 💛 that landed on my water container. It took me quite a while to clean everything up and when I was done, I realized that there was still a big glob of the yellow paint sitting there. I didn’t have anywhere to put it , so I thought what if I just put it on the painting? So I took my palate knife, scraped it up and spread it out over a couple areas in my painting. It made me change directions. But I actually ended up liking the effect on the painting. and I’ve noticed that over and over again in art and in life. Sometimes the very thing that I think is the biggest mistake ends up being something good or useful in the long run. But it’s hard to see that in the moment. Yet if we can train our minds to look for opportunities where we have obstacles, we can grow more than we ever thought.
